FAUNA CALENDAR:

In which part of Argentine Patagonia will I work?

You will work in the nature reserve “La Esperanza” 80 km north of the city of Puerto Madryn. It has 12 km of coastline on the South Atlantic Gulf of San Matías, with an area of 6,700 hectares. It is a refuge for guanacos, pumas, sea lions and other species throughout the year. Every year during the corresponding season you can see southern right whales, orcas, humpback whales and dolphins. Puerto Madryn is located northwest of the province of Chubut in Argentina. It is on the shores of the Golfo Nuevo. It is considered the gateway to the Valdés Peninsula, which was declared a World Heritage Site by the UN in 1999 and a Biosphere Reserve in 2015. This is where you will see most whales. (Puerto Madryn is also the national diving capital).

Arrival airport

If you are going to work on this project, then you must arrive at El Tehuelche Airport (PMY) in Puerto Madryn as a first choice, or at Marcos A Zar Airport (REL) in Trelew. In either case, someone from our staff will be there to receive you at any of these airports.

Lodging and Meals

Accommodation will be shared with other Mondify volunteers or interns in La Esperanza Reserve. You will have the opportunity to get to know your colleagues better, share experiences and explore the surrounding area together. The accommodation is safe, clean and comfortable. Three daily meals are included.

Leisure

At weekends, you will have enough time to get to know the northern region of Argentine Patagonia. Valdes Peninsula, a World Heritage Site. There you will be able to observe whales, penguins and orcas in their natural environment. Another interesting place to visit is Punta Tombo, a colony of more than half a million penguins. Do not miss the opportunity to dive. Puerto Madryn is the national capital of diving. You can dive with sea lion pups and explore sunken ships. The city has restaurants and museums to visit on your days off. You can also take excursions to the Chubut River Valley, where you will learn about the Welsh colonies established in the area and visit the most important paleontological museum in the country.
